After 2 heavy defeats in their opening games of this series, West Indies restored some pride with a battling draw against England at Trent Bridge. Indeed, were it not for bad light Sobers' men might have won.
West Indies batted 1st in overcast conditions which lasted the match. Viv Richards scored a scintillating 111, Lara a skilfull 96 and the reliable Dujon fell 5 short of a hundred.
England replied to West Indies' 420 by breezing to 314-3 at close of play on day 3. Hammond played a princely innings of 189, but West Indies' bowlers fought back as 7 wkts fell for 26 in a total of 347. Andy Roberts used all his guile in securing 5-59.
West Indies consolidated & Sobers declared just before lunch on day 5 at 231-6 (setting a target of 304 off a minimum of 51 overs). Hobbs & Hutton accepted the challenge by racing to 88, then Man of the Match Hammond (63 off 76) & Pietersen (49) took over. But to their credit West Indies' bowlers held their nerve and it was England who were holding on at the end.
