South Africa drew level with New Zealand in the ATG Test C'ship following a convincing 10 wicket win over Sri Lanka in Durban.
Arjuna Ranatunga chose to bat 1st on a bouncy pitch and must have had 2nd thoughts when Jayasuriya was hit on his head in Donald's opening over. The visitors showed spirit, especially Jayawardene whose inns of 136 lasted 8 minutes shy of 5 hrs. Philander collected 6-65 as Sri Lanka were all out for 294.
The next 2 days were dominated by South Africa's batsmen. Barry Richard's and Graham Smith's running between wickets was exemplary until the latter was run out for 72. The majestic Richards went on to 166 in 404 mins, while Graeme Pollock hit an effortless 81. Smith declared at 502-9 at 5.30 on day 3, but South Africa's bowlers had to work hard for victory.
Sri Lankan defiance was typified by Sanath Jayasuriya (58) and Kumar Sangakkara (80), but 5 wickets then fell for 35 and resistance faded. De Silva was stranded on 95 having played with great courage. South Africa chased their target of 101 with ease and without loss. Man of the Match Barry Richards showed again what a great batsman he is.
