Australia beat England by 5 wickets in a thrilling test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Bad weather and bad light hounded the game, yet it was still completed in a little over 3 days.
England won the toss and elected to bat first on a wicket that was scruffy in appearance and looked as though it would favour the bowlers throughout. So it proved as 35 wickets fell in 251 overs for just 597 runs (at a RPO of 2.38).
England struggled in their first innings and were 54 for 4 when George Hirst came to the crease. He starred for England, hitting 54 not out and along with the tail, managed to drag England to a respectable score of 180 all out. Hugh Trumble was the pick of the Aussie bowlers, taking 5 for 41, with Noble and Giffen picking up 2 apiece.
Australia got off to a great start and were 107 for 1 midway through the afternoon session of day 2. Gilbert Jessop came on to bowl and immediately turned the game on its head. He dismissed Fry then Bardsley who had battled to 87 on a wicket that was doing everything it could to help the bowlers. Jessop ended with 3 for 38 and was supported by Syd Barnes (3 for 48) as England fought back and bowled out Australia for 210 (a lead of 30).
England started their 2nd innings brightly, ending day 2 just 2 runs behind Australia without the loss of a wicket. Day 3 was all Australia however as Trumble and George Giffen turned the game in Australias favour. After being 51-0, England were skittled out for 116 with Trumble taking 5 for 29 and Giffen 4 for 26. CB Fry was the only standout for England, making 45.
Australia needed 87 to win and while batting was difficult, they made it home for the loss of 5 wickets. Gilbert Jessop impressed once again with 2 for 32.
Australia qualify for the next round and England are eliminated.
Next, is a group of Interwar teams. They will play in a single round robin tournament with the group winners making it to the next round.
