Decades Tournament - 1940's England v 1940's World XI

The 1940's World XI beat England in front of a packed crowd at the Oval.

England won the toss on a pitch that had been heavily affected by rainfall and elected to field first.  They failed to capitalise in bowler friendly conditions and the first 2 wickets added 106 runs.  Jeff Stollemeyer (83) and Vijay Hazare (74) top scored for the World XI as they posted a handy score of 300 all out.

England started brilliantly with an opening stand of 102 between Hutton and Washbrook.  They then collapsed and were bowled out for 186.  Poor batting and brilliant spin bowling from Bert Sutcliffe gave the World XI a huge first innings lead of 114.  Sutcliffe posted figures of 6-37, helped by pace bowler Jack Cowie (2-39).

England needed a better performance with the ball and they reduced the World XI to 92-5, mainly thanks to the spin of Doug Wright.  Vijay Hazare combined with Robert Christiani in a crucial stand of 102 before the World XI lost their last 5 wickets for 8 runs.  Jack Young was brilliant, taking 4 for 6, leaving many of the crowd wondering why he hadn't bowled sooner.

England needed an unlikely 315 to win on a pitch that was now turning sharply and exhibiting variable bounce.  After an bright opening stand of 33, they lost regular wickets and were eventually bowled out for 147.  Sutcliffe starred once again, taking 6 for 37 for a 2nd time and ended with figures of 12 for 74 as the World XI cruised to a 167 run victory.

England now need to beat Australia in their final game to have any chance of qualification.
