Peter May's England side beat the West Indies by 3 wickets in their 1950s Test at Port of Spain, thus qualifying for the knock out stage.
Frank Worrell won the toss and West Indies had first use of a good Queen's Park Oval pitch. They were bowled out for 363 just after lunch on day 2, with half centuries from Hunte, Weekes, Worrell and Alexander.
England were rocked by Trueman sustaining a muscle injury that curtailed his bowling in the match. However, the Yorkshire quick's lusty 1st innings 64 would prove invaluable. England replied with 330 all out by tea of day 3, Cowdrey 111 and 1 of 4 Walcott stumpings in the match.
A 257 minute vigil by opener Allan Rae (103) was the bed rock of West Indies' 2nd innings 268-8. Tyson returned on the 4th afternoon to take 5-57 and precipitate a collapse of 6 wickets for 32 runs.
Set 302 to win in 4 sessions, England slumped to 129-5 on day 5 before Dexter and Appleyard put on 138 for the 6th wicket. Dexter was majestic for his 147 ball 103 but it could be argued West Indies were a bowler light and the rapid Gilchrist would have appreciated more help. While the home spinners did well, the contrast in quality between the 2 bowling attacks was stark and was ultimately decisive.
