Decades Tournament - 1960's South Africa v 1960's Australia

South Africa opened the 1960's group with a momentous win, as they crushed Australia by 8 wickets in a test match at Port Elizabeth.

Australian captain Ian Chappell won the toss and elected to bat first on a hard baked clay surface that was expected to be slow paced.  Australia toiled however and batting never seemed easy against a brilliant South African pace attack.  The visitors were bowled out for 140 early on day 2 as Chappell top scored with 37.

South Africa replied with 289 and took a large 1st innings lead of 159.  Eddie Barlow scored a brilliant 113 (the only century of the match), ably assisted by a handy 44 from Pollock and 37 from Lindsay.  John Gleeson was the pick of the Aussie bowlers, taking 5 for 48 with his mystery spin but South Africa were well on top.

Australia struggled once again in the 2nd innings as pace, seam and swing were met with accuracy.  Despite more defiance from Chappell, the South African quicks were simply too good and Australia were all out for 209 as Day 4 came to an end.  Mike Procter was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 36.

The Proteas only needed 61 for victory and they reached their target just before lunch on day 5.  Barry Richards looked imperious and bludgeoned his way to 41 before falling to a brilliant yorker from Hawke.  It would be Barlow who fittingly saw South Africa home however, and his brilliant all-round performance (as well as captaincy) earned him the award for man of the match.

Australias qualification hopes now hang in the balance and they head to Melbourne knowing that only victory against the West Indies will do.
