Decades Tournament - 1960's West Indies v 1960's South Africa

South Africa once again proved that they are the best team in Group E (1960s) as they crushed the West Indies at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Eddie Barlow won the toss and chose to field on a hard, dark coloured pitch.  He expected his quartet of fast bowlers to find pace and bounce, but South Africa did not have the going all their own way.  They took wickets in clumps, and in between there were periods of fierce resistance by Sobers men. Seymour Nurse top scored with 61 while Neil Adcock was the pick of the bowlers taking 6 for 83.  West Indies declared late on day 2, losing 9 wickets for 298, after almost 2 hours play was lost to thunderstorms.

Both teams were relatively happy and South Africa hoped to score big runs on a wicket that had slowed and seemed better for batting.  Wes Hall and Lance Gibbs turned the game on its head however, reducing the Proteas to 42 for 3.  Eddie Barlow and Colin Bland put together a stand of 145 however, and South Africa were eventually bowled out for 284.  Barlow top scored with exactly 100, while Bland scored 72 and wicket keeper Lindsay 49.

West Indies had a narrow lead of just 14 and needed a big total to put pressure on South Africa and improve their chances of qualification.  Once again though, the South African quicks blew away their opponents.  West Indies were skittled for 152, with Mike Procter taking 4 for 34 and 'Goofy' Lawrence 2 for 31.  Barlow himself, chipped in with 2 for 6 and South Africa were set a modest target of 167 to win.

The West Indies managed to make a few inroads but the result was never really in doubt.  South Africa cruised to a 7 wicket win and now move on as winners of Group E.

Colin Blands batting (72 and 39 not out) and 4 catches made him worthy of the man of the match award.
