Decades Tournament - 1970's Australia v 1970's Rest of the World

Jeff Thomson finds some rare pace and bounce on a fairly docile track in Hobart

An easy paced Hobart pitch had the last word in the 1970s Test between Australia and Rest of the World. Tony Greig won the toss and ROW enjoyed batting, compiling 283-3 on day 1 in which India's little master Sunil Gavaskar contributed a belligerent 105. Zaheer (78) and Majid (66) helped boost ROW's 1st innings total to 460-9d on day 2. Dennis Lillee bowled manfully, taking 3-93 and was the pick of Australias bowlers.

Nearly 2 hours were lost to light showers on day 3, a day dominated by Doug Walters' exhilarating innings of 169. Along with the luckless McCosker, who fell 1 short of a hundred, these 2 edged the Australians to 416 all out (44 behind).

Day 4 started late because of heavy rain and there were more weather interruptions to come. In between, ROW established a lead of 186 by stumps and this was extended to 261 when Greig declared before lunch on the 5th day.

Australia started their innings with every intention of chasing down their target, but when Bedi dismissed McCosker and Greg Chappell in the same over they were forced to reevaluate. The pitch was taking spin but Ross Edwards (66no) and Rodney Marsh (32no) navigated the home side to the safety of an honourable draw. All rounder Clive Rice, with 51 and 102no, as well as 5-44 in Australia's 1st innings, was man of the match.
