Strong Pakistani representation meant Rest of the World were assured of local support for their crucial 1980s Test against England in Peshawar. But Imran suffered a blow when Kapil Dev was forced to pull out with injury at the 11th hour.
Gatting won the toss on a good batting pitch and he hit 77 in a 3rd wicket partnership of 158 with Boycott. The Yorkshire opener was eventually hilariously run out for 112. 6 wkts fell for 63 on day 2 and England's 1st inns total of 374 seemed below par.
This was proved in spades on day 3 when Mudassar, Vengsarkar and Javed made hundreds for ROW. Vengsarkar's 137 off 180 balls was a gorgeous knock which few will forget in a hurry. Imran declared midafternoon day 4 with his team 634-4 (Martin Crowe unbeaten on 163), a lead of 260.
4 English wickets tumbled before the close in a decisive passage of play. Gower's 108 on the last day was ultimately in vain as England were heavily defeated. There were 6 centuries scored in this Test match, but Imran's leadership and bowling figures of 9-129 earned him MOM.
Delighted as he was with his team's performance, Imran will have had 1 eye on events in Antigua and the performance of Australia. A win for Border's men would have seen them qualify with West Indies ahead of ROW. However rain scuppered Australia's victory charge and Imran's men ultimately progressed thanks to superior runs per wicket!
