South Africa's group of stellar cricketers from the 1960s overcame a spirited and talented Pre-War Australia team by 98 runs over 6 days of their Kingsmead Test match.
Australia skipper Joe Darling put Australia into bat and would have been quietly satisfied with the 1st day total of 269-8. Things went slightly awry the following morning when Mike Procter (79no) & 'Goofy' Lawrence added 78 for South Africa's last wicket.
When Australia batted, their left handed maestro Clem Hill made a pleasing 70 and all rounder Warwick Armstrong a brilliant 90 despite being felled by an Adcock bumper. However, the home side had a 1st inns lead of 161 and they amassed a formidable position of strength on day 4 through McLean (87) and Lindsay (69).
Australia were set a target of 436 in 2 days but had some respite when Eddie Barlow picked up an injury preventing him bowling much of day 5. Darling played a captain's inns of 64, Hill shone again with 73, while Armstrong defiantly reached 96 before a toecrusher delivery from Procter cleaned him up.
A valiant effort from the Australians but they came up against a South Africa team strong in batting and even stronger in pace bowling. Armstrong was a romantic choice for man of the match as his heroics kept the Test match going right to the end.
