Englands Bazball adventure in the Decades tournament came to an end today, as the 2000 Rest of the World side pulled off a fantastic 4 wicket win at Lords.
Captain Shiv Chanderpaul won the toss and elected to field first, denying England the chance to play the game they wanted and chase a target. England made 377 in their first innings with centuries from Ben Duckett and Harry Brook. The pair continued a rich vein of form in this tournament and shared a stand of 210. Only 2 others managed double figures however and England missed the first of several chances to put this game beyond the World XI.
Another chance came as England quickly reduced the World XI to 121-5 on the afternoon of day 2. Mark Richardson had hit a very good 64 but it was Mohammad Yousuf who wrestled the game back towards the World XI. He hit 102 and along with 61 from Chanderpaul they shared a crucial stand of 158, helping them to take a 17 run lead.
England started well in their 2nd innings but lost their last 6 wickets for 99 runs, finishing on 303 all out. Harry Brook hit his 2nd century of the match but 5 wickets from Chaminda Vaas gave his side a fighting chance as they were set a target of 287 to win.
The World XI lost 2 quick wickets but New Zealanders Stephen Fleming and Mark Richardson steadied the ship and added 99 for the 3rd wicket. England must have fancied their chances when Will Jacks removed Richardson and then nightwatchman Vaas in quick succession with the World XI on 175-4. Fleming kept them moving however and was joined by Yousuf who added another 66 to go with his first innings ton. Fleming and Yousuf both fell near the end, but not before the damage was done.
England dropped Fleming twice in the 2nd innings in another example of England missing opportunities, but in the end they were beaten by a better team. Harry Brook will be disappointed to hit 2 centuries and still lose the game, but he was deservedly awarded man of the match.
The Rest of the World 2000 team now move on to the next round, where they will face a South African team from the 1990s or 2010s.
