The 2020s Australians made it through to the Quarter Finals of the tournament after a 6 wicket win over the 1940s World XI at the National Stadium in Karachi.
World XI skipper Jeff Stollmeyer won the toss but must have quickly regretted his decision as his side slumped to 42-2. Merchant and Donnelly recovered the situation adding 78 for the 3rd wicket, but then the World XI collapsed to 201 all out. A brilliant spell by both Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon saw the World XI lose their last 8 wickets for 81 runs.
Australia struggled too as Hugh Tayfield tore through their lineup. The South African offpsinner took 8 for 75, reducing the Aussies to 253 all out. Steve Smith top scored with 42 and helped his side to a 1st innings lead of 52.
That lead would prove crucial as Australia took 3 wickets before the World XI were back in credit. 42 from Merchant and important lower order runs from Hazare and Rowan helped the World XI to 185 all out, but it was never seen as enough.
Australia needed 134 to win and must have been worried as they were quickly reduced to 19-2. Labuschagne and Smith steadied the ship however and added 56 for the 3rd wicket. Travis Head and Mitch Marsh then saw Australia home as they cruised to a relatively comfortable 6 wicket win.
Tayfields performance was superb, but Nathan Lyon proved the difference between the 2 teams and he was ultimately awarded the man of the match award.
Cummins men now move on to the next round, for a fascinating matchup against the English of the 1950s.
