The 1980s West Indies completed a 150 run over the 2000s South Africans in just under 4 days at the Antigua Recreation Ground. Their captain Viv Richards was at heart of the victory, hitting over half of his teams runs in a brilliant display of batsmanship.
Graeme Smith won the toss and elected to field first. Steyn and Ntini quickly had the West Indies 25-4 before Richards and Dujon steadied the ship, adding 100 for the 5th wicket. Richards then shared another stand of 130 with Harper as he scored 154 in 231 balls and just over 5 hours.
Steyn and Ntini shared 5 wickets each as the West Indies were dismissed for 309. South Africas confidence was quickly undone however, as they slumped from 95 for 1 to 195 all out. Malcolm Marshall blew his way through the South Africa lineup, taking 5 for 36 in a ferocious spell of fast bowling to give the West Indies a big 1st innings lead.
They then consolidated their commanding position and were eventually bowled out for 346 to set South Africa a target of 461 to win. Richards hit 199 and was only dismissed after a brilliant diving catch from Smith off Ntinis bowling.
South Africa started well reaching 96 off just 16 overs. Roger Harper then wrestled back momentum taking 2 wickets in 2 balls, and the end result then seemed inevitable. Smith hit 83 and de Villiers 75 but 3 wickets from Harper and 4 from 'Big Bird' Joel Garner saw South Africa fall to 310 all out.
The West Indies completed a huge win over a very strong South Africa team. Richards heroics ensured the man of the match award and the West Indies now set up a fascinating contest with the 1960s South Africans.
