South African cricket has been well represented in the knock out stages of the Decades tournament, and composite teams from the 1990s and 2010s fought out an interesting Test match in Cape Town.
Cronje put SA10 in to bat on a true paced pitch with a green tinge. He must have felt vindicated when Donald reduced the batting side to 12-2, but opener Aidan Markram's brilliant knock of 177 meant SA10 ended up with 382 in their 1st innings.
In reply, SA90 struggled with the pace and bounce of Morkel. All rounder McMillan struck a defiant ton as the last 6 wkts fell for 85. SA10 had a 1st inns lead of 56, and JP Duminy (128) starred in a 4th day run spree which left the 90s team requiring 425 to win.
The Test match was arguably over as a contest that 4th evening as left arm quick Wayne Parnell reduced SA90 to 40-4 with high quality swing bowling. Parnell took 6-40 (8w in match) as SA90 slid inevitably to a 165 run defeat on day 5.
No praise is too high for Kepler Wessels' efforts in vain with the bat this match. Following his 1st innings 58, the left-handed opener carried his bat 2nd time round for a superb 152 off 248 balls. Two talented teams who would grace the later stages of this competition, but Parnell's man of the match performance with the ball was ultimately the difference on a batsman's pitch.
