Decades Tournament - Final - England 1950s v South Africa 1960s - First Test

South Africa 1960s crushed 1950s England by an Innings and 45 runs at Lords, in the first test match of the Decades Final.

Eddie Barlow won the toss and elected to bat first on a poorly prepared wicket.  South Africa lost 2 early wickets before recovering and building a formidable first innings score.  Colin Bland steadied the ship, scoring 106, but he fell with his side on 186-5 and in a little trouble.

Wicket keeper Dennis Lindsay then changed the game and put South Africa in total control.  He hit a superb 119, batting for over four hours with the tail, to take South Africa to 393 by tea on day 2.  Bob Appleyard was expensive, but starred with 4 wickets for England.

South Africa then dominated every session of play that followed as they battered England into submission.  Their pace quartet decimated Englands first innings, reducing them to 152 all out.  Godfrey Lawrence took 4-29, while Colin Cowdrey put up Englands only resistance with a stubborn 80 not out.

Cowdrey fell quickly in the 2nd innings however and the result seemed inevitable.  Peter May hit 77 and Ted Dexter 55, but England slumped to 196 all out and an innings defeat mid way through Day 5.

England need to regroup quickly as the teams head back to South Africa for the 2nd test.

Dennis Lindsay was the deserving man of the match, taking 7 catches in the game in addition to his match defining century.
