South Africa 2010s pulled off an amazing 4 wicket victory against the Rest of the World 2000s side at Christchurch and booked a place in the Semi Finals of the Decades tournament.
South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to field first. After losing an early wicket, the World XI settled and made 373 in their first innings. Stephen Fleming hit a brilliant hundred with 64 from Sangakkara and a handy 53 from Vettori down the order.
South Africa started well but went from 75 without loss to 240 all out. Shane Bond took 4-61 and ripped through the South African middle order. Faf du Plessis hit an important 58, batting with the lower order, but the Rest of the World had a big lead of 133 going into the second half of the match.
South Africas pacemen Morkel and Parnell then took 4 wickets apiece and pulled their team back into the game. The Rest of the World collapsed, losing 6 wickets for 93 and were all out for 199. Only Mohammed Yousuf stood up, hitting a brilliant 103 not out. Vernon Philander must have been desperate for the ground to swallow him up after dropping both Chanderpaul and then Yousuf in successive balls (with Yousuf only in his 40s at the time).
South Africa needed 333 to win and lost 2 early wickets. Elgar and Duminy rebuilt the innings and shared a stand of 135 to give South Africa a chance. du Plessis then hit another half century and brought his team to the brink of victory. Philander managed to make amends for his earlier fielding errors and hit the winning runs to give South Africa a momentous win. Skipper du Plessis won the man of the match award for his batting and captaincy and South Africa will be full of confidence going into the next round.
South Africa 2010s will now meet either the 1950s English or 2020s Australians in the Semi Finals.
