A Rest of the World team from the 1980s beat a South African inter war side by 54 runs in an entertaining 6-day Test at Johannesburg.
The Wanderers curator did superbly, providing a wonderful batting surface which also provided encouragement for bowlers. Imran won the toss and the World XI racked up 581 over the first 2 days. Martin Crowe hit a stylish 139 off 217 balls (19 fours), supported by Shastri (97), Azharuddin (87) and Miandad (82).
South Africa responded positively, with Mitchell (80) giving his side a good start & Rowan (96), Viljoen (93) and Dave Nourse (99) making life hard for toiling bowlers. South Africa were eventually all out for 545, but by lunch on day 5 the visitors had declared their 2nd innings after lusty hitting from Imran and Kapil Dev. Set 357 to win.
South Africa slumped to 65-3 before hopes were revived by Bruce Mitchell's defiant 138. However, his dismissal to Miandad's part time leg spin saw the remaining 7 wickets fall for just 102. A valiant but unsuccessful effort by Jock Cameron's team, who nevertheless took some solace from man of the match Mitchell's performance. Imran's talented world side march on to the quarter finals with optimism.
